Chapter 17

Victoria skipped breakfast and hopped onto her plane fifteen minutes late. Hungover.

She hadn’t planned on getting drunk the night before, but once she started drinking, she didn’t know when to stop. Why stop, when stopping meant thinking about Anna? And Madison?

Fuck Madison. The escort was way too perceptive for her own good. Always on the verge of uncoiling what made Victoria tick. Before Victoria even knew what she was doing.

She was right. She had spent the whole evening thinking of Anna. Hell, she never once stopped thinking about Anna ever since everything went to hell and she was left single.

“Look who finally came,” Pepper mumbled into the top of her Diet Coke. “The star of this shitshow.”

“Fuck off.” Victoria slumped into one of the leather recliners, holding her head between her pressing fingers. Was she wearing her sunglasses? No way. The sun streaming through the airplane window was giving her such a massive headache that…

That she almost didn’t see Madison sitting in the other leather chair, netbook in her lap and pretty pink nails clacking to the happy tune of work getting done.

Clacking. Clacking. Because the fucking roar of jet engines wasn’t going to be enough once the plane got going?

Victoria didn’t acknowledge Madison until they were in the air and Pepper sat at the tiny desk by the bathroom, returning calls and emails. Victoria was content to go to sleep if she could – after all, it was a relatively quick jaunt to Paris – but Madison’s happy clacking was about to make Victoria burst in anger.

“What are you doing?”

Madison stopped typing long enough to give Victoria an amused look. “Updating my résumé.”

“Oh.”

“Decided I better make sure my recent experiences are on there.”

Victoria blushed, and it wasn’t from the alcohol still touching her cheeks. “So this is how I will be immortalized, huh?”

Madison went back to typing. “I accept.”

“What?”

She received another happy glance. “Your apology.”

“My what?”

“For last night. So rude to me.”

Victoria sighed and asked Perdita the stewardess for an iced tea. “Suppose I was an ass.”

Madison didn’t say anything as she went back to typing. Her résumé. Her blasted résumé! Of all things! What kind of résumé did an escort have, anyway? Was she applying to some other job? Victoria hated to admit it, but she was rather intrigued.

“So why are you in such a hurry to update your résumé?”

A slender, soft arm leaned against the leather chair. Madison’s finely washed and combed hair caught speckles of sunlight as they moved effortlessly through the clouds. “Because there’s a very nice position opening at Le Château, and I want in.”

Oh. That place. Victoria should have guessed. Wasn’t that where her neighbor’s girlfriend worked? Yes. Of course it is.

“Do you know it?”

Victoria pressed her lips into a prim smile. “Yes. I’ve heard of it.”

“Ever been there?”

Was she messing with Victoria by saying things like this? “No. Can’t say I ever have. Too far out of my way.” She knew it was in a different state from where she lived. High up in the mountains, where elaborate manors and other estates dotted the countryside.
